The interior door handle was broken
I loosened all the screws holding the exterior door skin including the 2 long screws at the top of the door that hold the top part of the handle. Then I removed all the screws except one on each side of the door closest to the hinge. Then I was able to separate the door skin enough to reach in and remove the last screw holding the bottom of the handle. Then it was a matter of reinstalling the screw in the new handle and putting everything back together.
