One of the key contributors to food waste in North America is food going bad before being eaten – or the perception that is has gone bad based on how long you’ve had it. Read our guide to food hacks that are designed to keep your food fresher for longer.
By using proper storage methods, you can extend the lifespan of your produce by days or even weeks. For instance, did you know that some produce should be stored in a paper bag, while others should be stored in plastic, or foil? It may seem trivial, but the wrapping should be catered to each vegetable’s unique needs. Once you know the proper storage method and estimated shelf-life of each piece of produce, the next step in combating food waste is planning your meals around the lifespan of your produce. If you have cauliflower, plan to eat that first as it has a shorter lifespan than other vegetables such as carrots and celery.
Also keep in mind the optimal storage methods for meat, fish, poultry, and dairy. These guidelines are designed more for your own safety than extending the lifespan of meats and dairy, but they are helpful when planning your meals.
