How to Fix a Dampening Strap for a Washer That is Noisy and Leave Marks on Clothes

If you’re hearing a continuous banging noise while your washer is running, there may be an issue with your tub dampening straps. In some models on top-load washers, these straps are used to dampen the movement of the wash tub. An unbalanced or overloaded tub can cause premature wear on the straps. When one or more straps fail, the wash tub may bang against the outer cabinet. If this has happened to your washer, it’s important to get this fixed as it could lead to further damage if you continue to use the machine. You’ll find more information below, like 3D renderings and instructional videos, to help you determine if the tub dampening straps are causing the noise in your washer. If you do need to replace this part, we have a step-by-step guide to help you out.

What are Tub Dampening Straps and Where are They Located?

Some models of top-load washers use tub dampening straps to cushion the movement of the tub during the spin cycle. There are four straps attached to the top of the tub and to each corner of the cabinet. These straps are made of rubber and can fail with normal use.

What Type of Noise Can You Expect?

When the straps become stretched or damaged, the tub may make contact with the cabinet during the spin cycle and create a loud banging sound. Continuous large loads and excessive use will create more strain and cause premature failure of the straps.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Tub Dampening Straps in a Washing Machine

  1. After disconnecting your appliance from the power source, open the cabinet of your washer.
  2. Locate your tub dampening straps—there will be four of them, each one attached to the wash tub and a corner of the cabinet.
  3. Inspect the straps for any signs of wear, fraying, or damage.
  4. If any of the straps show the above signs, you will need four replacement tub dampening straps.

How to Install New Tub Dampening Straps

When installing new tub dampening straps, all four should be replaced at the same time as they tend to wear out at the same rate.

  1. Slide the screw into position in the strap prior to connecting it to the machine.
  2. Push the end of the strap up into the frame of the washer in the relevant opening, locking it into place as required.
  3. Position the strap into place on the tub ring.
  4. Secure the strap with the relevant fastening device.
  5. Repeat the process for the other straps if you are replacing them all at once, as we suggest.
