Basket Hub Kit

I call the part in the middle the agitator, so, if you can spin the agitator and the tub doesn't move, the hub is stripped out. The repair can be done in place. Instructions are as follows: 1. remove the plastic cap on top of the agitator with a screwdriver or your fingernail. 2. use a socket to remove the bolt in top of the agitator. 3. remove the agitator by pulling straight up. the first time I did this, I used channel locks on the left using a rag to not mar the agitator, and my hand lifting up on the right. it has to come up evenly. 4. The previous step will reveal the top part of the hub. Remove the screws and the top part of the hub. 5. You now can see the lower hub, the part that is bad. being careful to not leave any marks in the shaft, pull straight up on the lower part of the hub. With the hub being stripped out, you may can work it left and right with channel locks, or you can put the channel locks under the lower hub and pry with a screwdriver to begin working it up and out of the way. 6. Once the old hub is off, confirm that the splines and shaft line up properly with the new part. Press the new hub on with your hand, making sure the "top" is on top(It is different on top, you might could put it on upside down if not careful). pressing it down as far as you can go with your hand. 7. Once you are as far as you can go with your hand, place the old hub top part on and line up the screw holes and start the screws. If the screws will not start, lightly tap the top hub to move the lower hub in place (this is why you use the old top piece here). 8. Once the screws are started, tighten evenly about half a turn at a time alternating sides on which screw you turn (1/2 turn on left, right, top, bottom) to pull the top hub down evenly. This will pull the bottom hub into place. 9. Remove the old top hub and replace with the new one, tighten down evenly as described before. 10. After the hub is in place, replace the agitator, bolt, and top cap. 11. move the agitator and the tub should move with it. Success. There you go. This was my second one to break in as many years and I talked my 13 year old son into replacing over the phone due to being out of town. He is really a mechanical Kid though. Good luck.

Pull the back cover, release the top by pushing in the two clips on the front just under the seam and lay the washer on its side. While pushing on the bottom of the rod with the spring have someone pull the knuckle off the rod and pull rod out. Do just the opposite to install.

The part replaced was worn and was very easy to replace, this however did not fix the problem completely. I tore apart the motor again and due to the cost of those parts was about to throw in the towel. I noticed the brushes looked pretty wore so I gave them a deep cleaning and now the washer works great. I spent a total of $25 with shipping and the repair guy that came out wanted $500 to fix. I found a very helpful video outlining repair at another site. The part was a little less there but the shipping was higher. I have orders from this site and did this time as well and save money.

First of all thanks to this site for the right parts good instructions and fast delivery. I didn't get the bearing tool so I used a metal spike used to set concrete forms to remove the bearings and wood block to replace them 1. Remove the back of the washer with a screwdriver and Tape the lid to the top of the washer. 2. use a screwdriver or wood chisel to release the two catches on the front of the top and lift the top up and over (I used a chair to hold it). 3. remove agitator cover and find the bolt, remove the bolt and lift the agitator and gears out of the machine. Lift the center basket out and set it aside. 4.Set the washer on it side so you can get to the bottom of the machine (I leaned mine against a chair with a blanket in between to keep from scratching it). Remove the allen screw at the bottom of the rotor/motor. remove the outer part of the rotor/motor. 5. remove the 4 bolts and the plate securing the inner rotor/motor and pull it down so you can remove the plastic sensor holding the electrical connections. 6. Remove the second plate, if it hasn't fallen, and you will see the lower bearing and shaft. 7. Set the washer up and remove the shaft from the top. 8. Take the spike and hammer and, from the top , tap the lower bearing out. 9. Return the washer to the side position and from the bottom tap the upper bearing out. 10. clean up the grease and such from the machine. 11. Using a piece of soft wood as close to the same size as the bearing tap the new bearings back into place, switching positions on the washer as needed. Be careful with the bearings try to tap easy and make sure the bearings are going on straight. 12. Install the shaft into the bearings from the top, using the instructions supplied with the parts. 13. Install the rubber gasket per the instructions as well. 14. Put the agitator and gears back together. 15. Install the rotor/motor and sensor. 16. Secure the top and remove the tape.

Washer pumps water out but will not spin. Clothes are soaking wet. Agitator will spin separately from the clothes drum when empty of water. You should not be able to move them as separate componets untill the agitator is floating in water. The hub (WhirlpoolTest for the agitator moving separately from the clothes drum. Remove the center cap from the agitator. When reinstalling this cap the notch that you use to pry the cap off must align with one of the ribs. This cap is fragile and will break easily unless positioned correctly. Use a 7/16 inch (11mm) socket and ratcheting wrench to remove the center bolt holding the agitator to the motor shaft. This will be covered with a black bio-film left by algae and soap. Wipe off using a damp cloth. Bio-film is water soluble and is not grease. Using levers pry the agitator off the motor shaft (this can take some effort, a rocking motion is best). Under the agitator you will find the damaged hub held in place by 6 #2 Phillips screws. Remove these screws and the top of the hub removes easily. The damaged center gear of the hub will need to be persuaded off the shaft (pulling up, releasing then repeat the pulling up on the clothes drum will eventually take it off ). Clean everything using a damp cloth and install the new hub (the shiny washer stays under the inner gear). I used a short piece of 3/4 inch plastic pipe to tap the hub center back into place. There are 2 top gears in the kit one is for early washers and the larger one was for my late Maytag. Install the 6 screws tightening alternating around the hub to pull the parts together evenly. These screws do install into plastic, don't get carried away tightening these or they could strip and you will need to buy a very expensive clothes drum. Push the agitator back onto the motor shaft (a press fit, meaning that you must press it firmly to get it back where it belongs). Install the 7/16 inch (11mm) bolt (this you can install securely, puff,grunt!) and carefully install the cover for this bolt aligning that little notch with one of the raised fins on the agitator. Of course you are doing all of this standing on your head inside a washing machine.

My repair was probably different than some. The video's show just removing the bolt and the agitator will come out to replace the hub below it. My agitator was not coming out. I tried hot water and a variety of other ways. I finally had to cut the agitator off with a small saw and pry it off. The agitator was about $85 to repair the $19 part. Maybe there was some trick I was not trying but searched on line and tried everything including drilling a hole through the agitator and trying to lift it off. Did not work. The repair was a success and the parts were perfect and on time but disagree with just removing nut and pulling up on the agitator.
