Water would leak when washing and would make a mess.
I looked up my GE Washer - model # on the internet for Repair of GE washers. I saw the illustrated parts breakdown for the washer and located the incoming water source, where the hot & cold water lines enter the washer. I did this because the leakage began when the washer first began running. I located the area and noted it was what I call a diffuser that sprayed water into the tub... similar to a shower head. It had holes through which water sprayed but was clogged with calcium buildup. This caused water to be sprayed outward instead of into the tub. The proper nomenclature for this part is called a funnel shower head. To begin: 1.. disconnect electric power, otherwise pull washer electrical plug. 2. Turn off water supply & disconnect incoming water lines. 3. Insert two putty knives between "front panel" of washer & top of washer, each about 10" from each edge. Two locking devices, each located about 3 inches from each edge lock the front panel on. Slide the putty knives outward till you hit the locking devices, then pull out putty knives and insert them where you've located the locks. This will release the front panel from the top. Grab the front panel and pull outward to free, then lift upward to remove front panel. 4. Now to the control panel.. remove all screws from the backside of the panel and the face side will lift off. 5. Next, remove the top panel w/ lid by unscrewing two holding straps on each side of the front panel area. After this procedure, pull top panel outward and upward till loose. Once loose, remove the electrical switch hidden under the lid at the front. It is white, flat, 2 1/4" X 3/4" and is held from the bottom and has a wire connected to it, Remove the switch from the bottom by compressing its endlock and pushing the switch upward. Once loose, drop the switch back through the lid and place it off to the side. Now take the lid off. 6. The funnel shower head is located under the control panel frame in the middle. Place the front control panel that was removed on top of its panel and look downward near the middle. From the shutoff switch you will see a flexible water line held on by a wire clip. Follow that line and you'll feel the funnel shower head underneath. It is held on by two screws which protrude upwards. Get a small mirror and slide it under to see what task lies ahead. The screws on my unit were hex headed screws. You will need a 1/4" sae rachet set. Screws may vary so check them out first. Remove funnel shower head by removing 2 screws. With the pliers remove the wire clip holding the water line secure to the shutoff valve. Once removed, remove electrical sensor from shower head. Replace electrical sensor to new funnel shower head, reinstall with 2 screws and reconnect water line. Ensure that you replace the safety clip so you won't have a leak. Replace everything in the order you removed them. The top panel/lid slides into its grooved track so carefully install and push forward firmly. When properly installed it will be even on both sides. Hard water will plug up your funnel shower heads quickly so purchase an extra.
