The drive belt squealed and smelled like burning rubber
I first removed the old Idler Pulley by prying the washer off from the shaft. I thought at first they just put a washer on the shaft to hold it together but the old c-clip fell off after it rusted away. I found it in a small pile of rust on the base of the machine with a small magnet. I then got the new parts arranged for assembly. I remo ved the largest spring at the base of the drum near the motor with a pair of vise grips. There is very little clearance from shaft and the base of the machine so you need all the space you can get to put the new parts on. Be sure to put the spring back on in the same slot which was the second slot for my machine. Leave the top part of the spring in its slot and let it hang down. Take the new Idler pulley, insert the plastic spacer in between the new spring and install it inside the Idler Pulley onto the shaft. Put the tension spring on first and then the Pivot Shaft Washer. Install the c-clip and be careful since it is very small and could be lost easily. Keep a small magnet nearby just in case to pick it from the base of the washer since it may be hard to see if it gets away from you. Be sure to get the Tension Spring in the right hole that kind of looks like a triangle. There are six of them and you want to put the end of the spring in the third hole from the front looking in from the front of the machine. You can see them all by looking on the top right hand side of the motor. Just shine a flashlight there and you can see them. You then need to push the end of the spring into that hole (third one). If your machine originally had it in a different hole for instance like hole number two, put it in there. It could vary a little from machine to machine. Always use a new belt, a new Idler Pulley and Idler Pulley spring, a new Pivot Shaft Washer and new C-clip. Be sure to pad your arms or put some padding down since it will scrape your arms and or bruise them. It is in an uncomfortable position. Once that is on, install the new drive belt. Run the belt in from the right side under the biggest pulley, pull it to your left, wrap it around the motor's pulley, the Idler pulley and start it in the track of the largest pulley. While holding the belt in place, rotate the largest pulley with your right hand while pushing on the Idler pulley if necessary. As you rotate the largest pulley to the right the belt will go back into the track of the largest pulley and the belt will slip on. The last step is to put the BIG spring hanging down in front of you, on the drum, back into the second slot located on the base of the machine with vise grips. Now all you have to do is put the rest of the machine back together and check its operation. In the beginning if it smells just a little like burning rubber that should not be a problem. The belt is new and some of it will wear off while the water drains and the spin cycle begins. After a few loads of laundry the smell will go away. I have used my washer for many loads now and it works very well!
