Product Description

The capacitor, also known as a run capacitor, is a component in your fridge that allows the compressor to cycle on and off to maintain a constant temperature. If your fridge and freezer are too warm it may be necessary to replace the capacitor. Other symptoms include an unusually noisy and overheated compressor. You can check the capacitor for continuity using a multimeter. This is a genuine OEM replacement part made of black plastic that measures 1 inch by 1.5 inches. When replacing this part, be sure to check the electrical contacts on the old capacitor. If they are corroded or burnt, you will need to replace the overload relay assembly as well. Be sure to disconnect the power supply to your refrigerator before beginning this repair.

Hello Onesimo, Thank you for the question. We suggest testing the Relay and Overload Combination. This part is both the start relay and the overload. The start relay boosts the compressor, and then shuts off as soon as the motor gets up to speed and the overload provides extra protection against excessive temperatures. If you need help placing an order, customer service is open 7 days a week. Please feel free to give us a call. We look forward to hearing from you!

I have been having trouble with my fridge, at first it would freeze up, get loud and I would need to let it defrost overnight and it would be good for at least 6 months. This happened for 2 years, then it started doing it more frequently. The evap fan (I’m assuming) would make a really loud noise & it would be louder when you open the freezer door. Then about 2-3 months ago when I plugged it back in the fridge was warm and freezer was fridge temp (can’t hear any fans running). So I unplugged it for the night and it went back to working normal again. Froze over not long after and plugging it back in, again the fridge is warm and freezer is fridge temp. What do you think I would need to fix it? I do have a multimeter to test things but I couldn’t get to the thermistor. Thank you!

Hi Marissa, Thank you for your question. If the fresh food and freezer sections of your refrigerator are too warm, there are some parts that you will need to check to see which one is causing the issue. You will need to check the evaporator fan motor, the condenser fan motor and the capacitor. We have included a link that you may reference on how to check these parts and some others as well. Once you have determined the part you need, please feel free to call customer service. We are open 7 days a week and anyone will be happy to assist you. We look forward to hearing from you!

Refrigerator runs most of the time and rarely stops. I have replaced the thermostat and the bi-metal defrost thermostat. It defrosts well and the air flow seems good. Chills everything well. The refrigerator is 13 years old and I would like to try and keep it and not have to buy a new one especially after all the repairs I have done to this one. I haven't timed it but I am estimating the refrigerator runs 95% during a 24 hour period. Any suggestions? Thanks,

Hi Dave, thank you for reaching out. Based on the description you have provided, we would recommend checking the control board, part number FIX11753802. It manages the functions of the refrigerator such as cooling and defrost times. You may need to replace it to resolve the issue. We hope that helps!

Both comparments very warm but fan working and lights on
Bought Capacitor, but I had to purchase Combo Start Up Kit that Cap goes into. The site said that 78% of the time my problem of both compartments being warm were resolved/repair by replacing Capacitor, but when the item was replaced it did not and my son looked further and found that it would then be the Combination Start Up Kit (Part# PS 11740412), which starts the compressor. Thanks to this site the video used to install both parts. I was able to use the old Capacitor and I am returning the new one first purchased.

Compressor wouldn't start (would try and start for 10 seconds, then pause for a 1.5 minutes, then try again)
According to everything I read, if the compressor wouldn't start then it's either a bad compressor ($365 for new compressor + $400 labor + $79 trip charge for technician to fix it) or it was a bad capacitor and/or start-dev (relay +overload circuit). For about $80 for the capacitor and start-dev I was willing to try these parts out and ju st skip having a technician come out. (If this didn't work, I would be going to buy a new refrigerator. I will say that this repair tactic wouldn't have been very doable if we didn't have a extra fridge in the garage so that could wait for the parts to be delivered. The repair was successful and it took about 15 minutes to complete the repair. Steps: 1) Pulled the fridge away from the wall and unplugged it. 2) Used my nut driver to remove the access panel at the bottom rear of the fridge. 3) The 'start-dev is pushed onto 3 pins on the side of the compressor. The capacitor is pushed onto 2 pins on the outside of the start-dev. Both can be removed together from the side of the compressor.4) Once removed, then disconnect the electrical 'molex' connector from the start-dev. Lift the tab on the side, and wiggle it off. 5) reverse these instruction to install the new parts. 6) After plugging in the fridge, the compressor should now come on and stay on while it cools your food down.

Freezer not defrosting correctly
We were hearing a clicking noise coming from our refrigerator/freezer combo. The freezer wasn’t defrosting correctly. I pulled the unit out, unplugged the refrigerator, pulled off the flimsy cardboard backing. I pulled off the old unit (compressor start relay/capacitor) unplugged it from the wiring harness, hooked up the new components to the unit and plugged it into to the compressor (three pins, only one way to put it on correctly) and put the cover back on. I plugged the unit back in and pushed it back into place and it has been working like a champ for a couple of weeks now

Freezer stopped cooling. Got the "Click and Whirr."
I'm not a repairman, but fairly handy, so I looked around on the net, and saw the problem was probably the capacitor or the combo start device. Found a video on this site that was very clear. I ordered both parts just to be safe. Got 'em within a week and did the installation as described on the video(s). Super easy. She fired right up an d is cooling as well as before! $95 for the parts and shipping saved a refrigerator freezer no longer made! Thank you!

Refrigerator would not freeze or cool
Discovered that I had a bad overload relay and fridge would not cool. Verified that I did have power to the compressor. After removing the assembly from the compressor. I found a rattle sound in the relay and disassembled the part , finding my deduction was correct. I went on line and found a compressor start kit and capicitor which was correct for my fridge. These parts came to $75.00 delivered. I thought that this is cheaper than a new compressor of $600.00 plus installation or a new fridge. So I ordered the kit and installed it in under 30 minutes. My fridge is up and running saving me a lot of money for costly repairs or a new fridge. Worked out fantastic allowing me to used the saved money elsewhere . Great site will continue to use this site in future repairs. Thanks

Kenmore redesigned my model. I removed the compressor starter module but had to replace with three different components and a cover. I extended the length of 2 wires by splicing to enable to fit under the new cover. Instructions advised taking this repair to an appliance tech. It took several hours for me to repair and it is fixed. Am ret urning the capacitor which I bought "just in case".

Compressor would not stay running. Sounded like it was trying to start, then would go off in a few seconds
I did the repair exactly like the video showed. The instructions were step by step and it was super easy to do. Even with overnight shipping, we only spent $108 to fix the refrigerator. We figured we would spend at least that much just to have someone come and look at it and it sure beats buying a new $1400 refrigerator! I would recomm end this site to everyone!!
