WATER VALVE WITH GUARD

Watched installation video and read other comments and instructions by others who changed part. Turned water off at the main in my utility room. There is a valve behind the unit in the supply line, but was not sure of the reliability of the old valve (11 years) having read about it online and problems with it. Figured if I didn't open ... Read more and close valve could save myself aggravation of old and perhaps leaky valve. Turned on a couple taps to release water pressure so I didn't have to deal with pressure at supply tubes. Unplugged unit. Did not have 5/16 nut drive, so removed screws with pliers from lower cover and lifted out. Found dual inlet water valve readily and removed screw retaining unit. Disconnected electrical connections. One was sticky and used pliers to pull off connecter taking care not to pull on wires. Took out water lines by depressing connnectors. Had towel handy to catch minimal drips. Used utility knife to trim supply lines by 1/2 inch before reinserting to ensure square seating. Attached electrical leads and inserted water lines and reattached to frame. Turned on water and no leaks. Took minute to vacuum dust from motor at bottom right of unit and other accumulations inside to promote cooling and function. Replaced cover on unit. However, this did not fix problem. Did additional search online and found thread that noted frozen water line in freezer door because of design flaw. Used hair dryer inside and outside freezer door along line a few times being careful not to melt plastics. After doing a few times, water came back on. I think it was a combination of replacing the valve and thawing the line that returned the water dispenser to functioning properly. I like this site and have used before on this fridge to replace heater in freezer compartment. Figure I have saved several hundred dollars and time and necessity of waiting on repairman for something I can do. Will always consult this site if I have an appliance problem.

This would have to be one of the easiest repairs I've ever done. In fact, the hardest part was kneeling down so low for about 15-20 minutes (and if you have knowledge and experience in this area, I am sure this time would be cut in half). Second, you remove the back panel from the refrigerator and on my model the water valve was on the bottom left while looking at the rear. Using my socket set I removed the one screw holding in the valve and pulled the unit out. I disconnected the two electrical plugs and then disconnected the water lines going from the valve to the water dispenser and to the ice maker (make sure you have a towel or handful of paper towels to collect the water that comes out of those lines). Then disconnect the water in line and that's it for the removal of the old unit. Getting the new water valve in was just as easy. First, connect the two power cords. Second, using a box cutter, trim about a half inch off the ice maker and water dispenser lines (so the lines can get a good fit into the new water valve). Then plug the water line in the respective holes. Third, secure the water in line to the valve, and finally, using your socket set, reattach the water valve to the fridge. Plug the fridge back in and turn the water back on to the water valve. I did this before reattaching the back panel so I could see if it was leaking. Once I decided it looked fine, I reattached the back panel and returned the fridge to the wall. That's it. It literally took more time to write these instructions then it did installing the water valve.

While I have not yet installed the valve I ordered, some comments are offered:
The existing installation suggestions likely proved the real solution: adjustment of freezer temperature to offset water dispenser feed line freezing. My water dispenser operated intermittently. Read more at the control board (measured at the cable connector) clearly switched when the door dispenser switch was pressed, but resulted in an obvious click from the water feed solenoid only when the dispenser worked. However I also followed the suggestion of reducing the freezer temperature (from -4 to zero) anyway, just in case. Sure enough, the next day the dispenser was working full time; and over a week later remains in operation.
Recent high humidity had been producing some frost around the ice dispenser; which may also have been affecting the water feed line.
I’m keeping the replacement valve assembly anyway, since one has previously failed “open” causing water to jet out of the dispenser uncontrolled until I cut the water supply to the refrigerator. That was repaired under warrantee by GE.
Unlike in the existing instruction, my refrigerator is a side-by-side, so the valve is in the upper equipment compartment, not below the unit. Also, I had installed a water shutoff valve in the back of an adjacent cabinet as a precaution when I renovated my kitchen adding my GE Monogram appliances; since reaching the old valve would require removing refrigerator mounting screws and rolling the unit out of its in-line cabinet installation. I suggest that proved to be a good idea.
As a side note, the soft pack used to mail the part failed to protect the electrical connector spades from being bent, but the damage appears minor.

This was not an easy diagnosis since there were no diagrams indicating if there were other valves that may have created the problem. However, once I illuminated the all other possibilities to this one valve the repair was easy and straight forward. Remove the back panel using a nut driver, 5 screws. Use nutdriver or pliers to remove the screw holding the old valve to the back wall of the frig. Unplug electrical from the old valve. Push in on water line to the valve and at the same time push in on the white color to holds the water line to the valve, then pull out water line from the valve. Do the same for the second water line to the valve. Remove old valve, and reverse the procedure to install the new valve. Connect the water line from wall to frig, plug in electrical, turn on water, test for leaks, test to make sure that water is dispensed. Replace rear panel and you are done.

After shutting off the power and water to the refrigerator, I removed the rear cover plate to the refrigerator, then removed the old Dual Inlet Water Valve which is attached with a single screw. Read more scharge hoses on the bottom of the valve by pressing on each one of the retention rings which release its' grasp of the hose from inside. Each discharge hose has its' own retention ring located where the hose enters the valve. Simply press up on the ring (to release it's grip on the hose internally) while pulling the hose down and out. To re-install these hoses into the new valve, cut about an inch off the ends of each discharge hose before re-inserting it into the new valve. This will ensure that the hose being inserted is free from scrapes and scratches from the old retention rings. Re-insert the color-coded electric plugs, re-install the water supply line on top and replace unit into refrigerator. Replace rear cover, plug refrigerator back into the wall outlet and you're done. Looked for the leak. Identified the leaking part and order it on this site Followed the instructions on the website and things went very smoothly.

I followed the video instructions. It was easy and required little time to repair.

After watching your on-line video, it was very easy to change dual water valve
