Dryer Blower wheel

If changing a motor or blower, it will tell you to hold the motor shaft while loosening the blower, (CAUTION: left hand thread). Because my dryer was not new, as I suspect most needing repairs aren't, I ended up doing what most everyone else had to do and that is,cut the shaft that extends into the blower wheel because that blower wheel absolutely refuses to break free from the motor shaft, most likely because it's seized onto the shaft, probably caused by years of moist air in the blower tunnel, (too bad the factory doesn't put a dab of Never Seize on the threads before assembling it when new). In any case, if you determine that you need a new motor, do yourself a favor and order a new blower wheel at the same time, then plan on cutting the old one off if it fails to budge on your first attempt. I used a Milwaukee M12 Hackzall, which is their smaller mini cordless reciprocating saw, with a 6" blade. A six inch blade is just long enough that it will flex, allowing the space required to get in between the blower and the end of the motor. You might be able to get a full size reciprocating saw in there although it will be tougher. Be careful not to destroy the felt seal on the cabinet wall that keeps the lint out of the main cabinet. Once the motor and blower are free of each other, the rest is simple and quick. If I spent two and a half hours completing the repair, 90% of that was trying to unscrew the blower from the motor. Found a video that showed how to disassemble dryer and replace the blower wheel. It was very helpful. Hardest part was removing the back clip that holds the motor down. Read more r shaft so you can use crescent wrench to loosen the blower wheel from the shaft. It also showed It was left-hand thread. Had to remove the back of the dryer and the dryer duct to expose the blower wheel from the back. Unscrewed it and found a broken blade from the wheel caused by an ink pen that had lodged in there. Cleaned out all the broken pieces and replaced the wheel. Putting it back together was easy. Discovered the screwdriver works best putting the clip back on the back of the motor instead of pliers like the video showed. Video was very helpful explaining how to do it tho. Be sure to lube the drum roller bearings before you put the drum back in. Putting the belt back on was a bit of a chore but doable if you can lay on your side and get both hands in there to do it. Video was very helpful with that. I would recommend squeezing the clips a little tighter with vice grips before putting the front panel back on as they tend to fall off while you're trying to get that thing back into position tho. They kept falling off back into the floor of the dryer. Works great now and should last another 5 years if I can remember to clean out my pockets

I first had to diagnose the source of the vibration and upon taking it all apart, discovered that one of the blades on the blower wheel had broken off. I was skeptical that a missing blade would cause such a loaud vibration, but the problem was entirely resolved with the new part.

Recommend anyone replacing motor on machine older than 5 years to order blower wheel up front. Wheel housing is plastic and gets brittle with age resulting in stripping of wrench surface or cracking when attempting to detach. Open the top of the washer with a flat screwdriver it pries open. Removed the top two 5/16 screws from the inside of the front panel and removed the front panel, It has no screws at the bottom. Then remove four 1/2 nuts from the drum panel and remove the drum panel. Take the drum belt off of the drum and remove the drum. Remove the motor ... Read more by unplugging the one big wire plug and two single blue wires. Be sure to take note of the location that each of the blue wires came from. The blower fan on the outside end of the motor unscrews clockwise and the motor is held in place with two clips. One on each side of the motor. The two drum rollers are each held on with a bolt in the center of them. After the motor is in place the new blower fan is threaded on counter clockwise on the motor shaft. Put the blower fan cover panel back on and reassemble the dryer. make sure the drum belt is in alignment with the motor pulley Also make sure the drum felt around the drum is not folded or torn and reinstall the drum panel. Spin the drum to check for metal on metal and or drag from roller alignment. Reinstall the front panel and close the top of the dryer.

Had I unwrapped my new blower wheel first, I might have realized this. My 30 year old machine is purring again. This is my second time using this site instructional videos. They are the best and have saved me lots of money!
