The defrost timer works on a predetermined schedule, to alternate between the cooling cycle and the defrost heater in your freezer. When the heating circuit is activated, it melts any ice that has formed on the evaporator coils, then the cooling system is started again. If ice builds up the evaporator, it reduces the airflow and the efficiency of your freezer. If the defrost timer has failed, it can cause the temperature in your fridge or freezer to get too warm, or it can cause ice buildup since the heating circuit will not be activated. You can test this part with a multimeter to see if it has continuity. If you need to replace this part, this is a genuine OEM replacement defrost timer. It measures approximately 3 inches long and 2.5 inches wide and is 60Hz and 120V.

Product Description

If I manually move the timer into defrost mode, it will eventually exit defrost cycle. It doesn't seem to ever voluntarily enter defrost cycle. I made a mark on the timer "dial" and it hasn't moved. I assume the timer is faulty?

My main problem is that the freezer coil won't defrost. If the timer doesn't fix the problem, what else could it be?

Refrigerator and freezer were warming to a temperature that was too warm.
Refrigerator and freezer were warming to a temperature that was too warm. I've known about defrost timers being a major part of the " frost free" design. In my model of refrigerator, the defrost timer is located at the bottom left on the left frame rail, behind a sheet metal mounting plate. Next to the drain pan. I recognized it with a f lash light, and the one way knob that can only be turned in one direction. I turned the knob to manually advance the timer, then the compressor started, but be gentle with this practice as it can strip the plastic gears. If you lift the knob as you turn it, it will disengage the teeth of the gear and just turn the cam itself, stopping the defrost cycle and starting the refrigerating cycle. Then it's good for approx. 24 hours. Then it hung up again in the same spot. I did this for a week because I didn't have the time. Then I looked up my frige model number, and I found this site on a web search. I ordered the part over the phone with the helpful sales rep, just to confirm the part number. I've read about ten pages of the same repair from this website. Nothing I recognized as my frige. But the site had an exploded view of my frige and putting 2 & 2 together I nailed it down. Ordered the part, 2 1/2 days it was here. The instructions for your particular model may have the color coding listed, mine was not. So I figured my model was too old, the wiring diagram was simalar to mine on procedure 1. Long story. It took me longer to write this than to do the actual repair. Wiring research 15 minutes, change out 10 minutes. Hope this helps.

Freezer was not defrosting and the bottom was not cooling down.
Unplugged the refrigerator. Took the cover off down in the Refrigerator, unplugged the old defrost timer and replaced with the new defrost timer. Easy as can be. Saved hundreds of dollars!

Freezer normal temp, fridge too warm.
I first checked the website for troubleshooting instructions. shut power to the Fridge. Check the defrost timer with an ohm meter. Then the evaporator fan motor and temperature control. The defrost timer and fan motor were bad, temp controller OK. Ordered the new parts . They arrived 2 days later. Installed the fan motor in reverse step of removing. Installed the defrost timer per instructions that came with it. attached the fan to the motor shaft. assured that the defrost timer was not in defrost mode. Restored power, set the control to normal, Made sure the fan started, it did. Shut the controller off, reinstalled all covers and turned the controller back on. checked temperatures the next morning, all normal. Freezer 0 to -10, fridge 40-35 degrees F.

1. Remove the panel in the inside/top of the refrigerator side
2. Remove old defrost timer
3. Test defrost timer for continuity using instructions on partselect.com (mine failed, no continuity on any of the leads)
4. Install new defrost timer according to instructions (based on wire colors)

Refrigerator would not cool and freezer did not freeze
To find out problem I tapped the thermostat and the compressor came on . I knew the defrost timer and thermostat were in the same compartment. I took a guess as to which one was bad. Well after I changed out the timer I still had same problem. So I ordered the thermostat. After I changed the thermostat problem solved. If I had it all over again I would have just ordered both right away and been done with it. Both timer and thermostat were very easy to change and only took 15 minutes to change after I watched the video. Easy job for most people if you have the tools. I will use this site again before I call a service man!! Thanks for the video. It made this job a snap!!

Regrigerator and freezer stopped getting cold. Unit was still running, just not getting cold.
After reviewing the answers online at the PartSelect website, it said that the most likely culprit was the "defrost timer". PartSelect had the part in stock, and at a good price. There was a short video showing how to replace this part, and though my model was a little different in appearance and location, the replacement of the part was pretty much a quick swap. The part arrived from PartSelect in 5 days, and only took about 20 minutes to have it installed, and everything put back in place. I plugged the refrigerator in, and let it run overnight. The next day we had cold drinks in the refrigerator and frozen popsicles in the freezer, all for a cost of about $37 for the part and shipping. You can't beat that! PartSelect came through with a good diagnosis of the likely problem, and an easy video on how to quickly fix it. Only took a little time, a nut driver, and a phillips screwdriver. Unplug the old defrost timer, and plug the new one in it's place. Fasten the defrost timer back in place with the 2 screws that held the original in place. Put the interior panels, and knobs back in place, and your done.

refrigerator got warm intermittantly
had problems troubleshooting because sometimes it worked fine. decided it was either the thermostat control or the defrost timer. Bought the defrost timer on suspicion (it was a lot cheaper than the thermostat control) That solved my problem. The old timer was getting stuck in the defrost cycle. Removed two screws with a nut driver at the top of the fresh food section.removed two clips on timer and plugged in new timer. Easy.

would not go into defrost mode,and melted icewater ran down under crispersand not drain hole that was frozen shut.
Unplug frige first.Open fridge door,three 1/4 inch screws held light and timer in place by plastic housing.Housing dropped down where to metal clips on plastic studs held timer in place.Unplugged two electrical plugs,removed metal flat clips and lifted off defective timer. Replaced new one,slid clips back onto plastic studs,plugged ba ck two electrical plugs,and screwed plastic housing back up with three screws..Had to put flat head screwdriver in hole and turn clockwise slowly until fridg started.In the mean time the drain hole had defrosted and water was showing in plastic tray front right where grill pull-off is,telling that it was once again working as before.Easy job,great parts price,and saved around 150.00-200.00
