Is there a way I can test both capacitors? My fan motor was making humming noises before it stopped working. The fan spins on its own(it's not locked up) But I don't see the round capacitor, my father told me to replace both.one has 35 micro farrets %5+-.@. 440v 50/60hrtz that's the round one. The other is the little black box @ 8micro farrets. When I took apart only 1 side was being used they had black sleeves covering the connectors. What is the difference if there's 2 prongs or 4? Can I use the 2 prongs being that they were only using one side of the capacitor?

Hello Philip, thank you for your question! Since the fan is humming, it is getting the proper power to it and most likely will be caused by a bad start winding on the motor that is causing the fan to stop working. You would want to replace the fan motor, part number FIX1532363. To test the capacitor, use a multimeter with a capacitance testing function. Then touch the probes to each terminal. If the capacitor is good, then the multimeter will show a reading very close to the rated value. Capacitors can lose capacitance over time and outside a 5% tolerance. If the multimeter shows a significantly different reading, then it is best to replace the capacitor. For dual run capacitor first test from Herm to common. Then test from fan to common. These readings should also match closely to the 2 rated values. You can also test if the capacitor has shorted to ground. Set the multimeter to ohms and touch the probes from each terminal to the side of the housing. The multimeter should display OL or open loop, as no terminal should have continuity. If there is any resistance, then the capacitor has shorted to ground and should be replaced. Glad to be of help!
