How to Fix the Terminal Block for a Dryer That Will Not Start

If your dryer won’t start or won’t turn on, there’s a chance that it may be because of an issue with its terminal block. The terminal block in your dryer is where all of the power cables meet and are connected to the different parts of the appliance. If the terminal block is bad or damaged, it may mean that the power won’t be delivered properly and then the machine may experience problems starting or turning on. Luckily, we have prepared a detailed guide to help you not only diagnose terminal block issues and figure out whether it’s the cause of your dryer problems, but also to show you how to access and replace it so you can start drying again as soon as possible!

What is a Terminal Block?

A terminal block is a small piece of plastic that holds together all the various inner power cables in your dryer and connects them to the singular power cord for delivering the power to the various components within your appliance. This terminal block may be a plastic or ceramic part fashioned with terminals that connect the power cord to the dryer’s wiring harness. However, some models don’t have a terminal block and instead the power cord connects directly to the wiring harness with connectors that slide together.

Where is the Terminal Block Located?

The terminal block in your dryer will be located near the power cord, wherever that is in your appliance, but normally in the rear of the machine. Our 3D diagram shows the general location, although this may vary from dryer to dryer so consult your user manual to find your terminal block’s exact location.

How to Access, Remove, and Inspect the Terminal Block in a Dryer

FIX TIP

FIX TIP

Before you begin the repair process, it’s recommended that you remove your dryer’s lint screen. Also, remember to first disconnect your dryer from its gas and wall outlet before beginning any repairs.
  1. Using a putty knife or the appropriate socket-set/screwdriver, disconnect the back panel from your dryer.
  2. Locate your dryer terminal block in the rear of the machine. There will likely be an access panel for this terminal block that may have some securing screws you will need to remove.
  3. Once accessed, check for any cuts or disfigurations on the exterior part of the block (such as on the cables leading from the outlet to the block).
  4. Unscrew the individual cables inside the terminal block.
  5. Use a wire stripper to remove the insulation around the bad parts of the wire and cut it off.
  6. If the cuts or abrasions are on the interior part of the block (leading from the block into the machine), we recommend contacting your local technician or the warranty department for your machine, since it’s likely that you’ll need to re-wire the essential components of your dryer.

How to Test a Terminal Block

  1. When inspecting your terminal block, keep an eye out for any visual burn marks or damage.
  2. If the wires from the power cord are also damaged, they’ll need to be replaced as well. To learn how to access and diagnose your power cord, check out our expert-made guide that comes with step-by-step instructions.
  3. If you notice any other components with damage to them, be sure to take note and replace them as soon as possible, since electrical issues can become worse over time.

How to Install a New Terminal Block

  1. Slide the heat-shrink tubing over the cables and use a heat-gun to shrink the tubing into the right place.
  2. Now you can place the cables back into your new terminal block, with the same arrangement as previously. A useful tip is to use a camera/smartphone to photograph the positioning and location of the cables during the disassembly to help ensure they are replaced in the right way when reassembling the terminal block.
  3. Reinstall the terminal block into the dryer, and connect the ground wire.
  4. Close the access panel.
  5. Slide the top portion of your dryer back into place, and secure with the necessary screws.
  6. Plug your dryer back in, and your repair is now complete!
