How to Fix the Door Hinges on a Dryer With a Sagging Door

The hinges on a dryer door are typically made of metal and are designed to support the weight of the door as it opens and closes. Over time, the constant use of the door can cause the hinges to wear down or become misaligned, which can lead to the door sagging. Additionally, the weight of the door itself can also contribute to the sagging from the hinges. Dryer doors are typically made of metal and can be quite heavy, especially on larger models. If the hinges are not strong enough to support the weight of the door, which can happen if they’ve worn out over time, the door can begin to sag.

How to Diagnose the Door Hinges

If your dryer door feels loose or does not line up with the frame of the dryer, you will need to look at the door hinges.

What are Door Hinges?

The door hinge is a metal piece that joins the door and the cabinet together. It enables the door to pivot open and close, all while supporting the weight of the dryer door.

Where are the Door Hinges Located?

When you fully open the dryer door, you will be able to locate the hinges on the inner side of the door frame. They are hard to miss because they are often shinier than the door itself.

How To Access, Remove, and Inspect the Door Hinge

  1. As with all repairs, begin by unplugging your dryer. If you have a gas dryer, shut off the gas supply and disconnect the gas lines.
  2. Open the dryer door as wide as it can go.
  3. Remove the lower screws securing the hinges to the frame.
  4. Loosen the upper screws and carefully lift the door and hinges from the screws.
  5. Remove the screws to release the hinge you’re replacing.
  6. Wobble the door to see if it has been tightened at the hinges. Visually inspect the door hinge for cracks and wear-and-tear.

How to Install New Door Hinges

  1. Install the new door hinge by positioning it on the door and securing it with the screws.
  2. Position the door and hinges on the screws left in the frame.
  3. Tighten the screws and reinstall the lower screws.
  4. Confirm that the door closes properly and plug the appliance back in.
